The Network spans eight NHS trusts, each playing a vital role in delivering maternal medicine services across the region. Working together to plan your care
Every month, our specialist team meets remotely with teams at each of our spoke sites to talk about patients who need extra support during their pregnancy because of a medical condition. Together, we decide the best plan for each person — this might mean giving advice to the local team, inviting someone to be seen in our specialist clinic, or occasionally arranging for their care to be moved to the RVI in Newcastle for the birth. Patients are always at the heart of these discussions. In 2025/26, we reviewed 337 patients across these meetings.
Emergency support, any time
If someone becomes seriously unwell during pregnancy because of a medical condition, our specialist team is available around the clock, every day of the year. We work with NECTAR (specialist critical care transfer team) to hold urgent video conferences bringing together the right experts quickly. If needed, NECTAR will arrange for a patient to be safely transferred to the Maternal Medicine Centre in Newcastle.
Supporting the whole Network
As well as caring for individual patients, our team works across the Network to train staff, review cases, develop clinical guidelines and make sure that the care provided at every site meets the highest standards.
How we work
The Network is led from the Maternal Medicine Centre at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle and works closely with all of our spoke sites across the region.
